Surname Saturday: BASCOM

This week's surname is BASCOM. It is my grandmother's maiden name.

Her father was Dewey Francis BASCOM. He was born 6 May 1898 in Dillsboro, Dearborn county, Indiana. On 10 Jan 1917, he married Alice Susan HILLIS in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn county, Indiana. He died 2 Jun 1875 in Hamilton county, Ohio.

Dewey's father was Willard Theodore BASCOM. Born 4 Jan 1868 in Rising Sun, Ohio county, Indiana. He married Susan SANDERS in May of 1891. He died 30 Mar 1934 in Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio.

Willard's was the son of Robert Bruce BASCOM. R B was born 3 Nov 1839 in Indiana. He married Olive BOVARD on 4 Nov 1866 in Ohio county, Indiana. He died 10 Mar 1907 in Ohio county, Indiana.

R B's father was Carley H BASCOM. Carley was born 27 Aug 1815 in Vermont. His family moved to Switzerland county, Indiana and Carley married Elizabeth POTTER there on 22 Dec 1838. He died 5 May 1889 in East Enterprise, Switzerland county, Indiana.

Carley's father was Gaius BASCOM who died around 1822 according to estate proceedings in Switzerland county. He left 6 children orphaned. They were Schuyler Stone BASCOM, Gaius BASCOM, Fanny BASCOM, Eliza BASCOM, Carley H BASCOM and Laura BASCOM.

It is widely believed on the internet that Gaius was the son of Caleb BASCOM. According to "Thomas Bascom and his Descendants" by Edward Doubleday Harris (1870), Caleb had a son Gaius who

GAIUS, said to have first settled in Vermont, but afterwards went with his family to the West, and from there down the Mississippi River.

I am still looking into proving this to be Gaius's true family.

Any BASCOM cousins are encouraged to email me at genwishlist@gmail.com. I look forward to collaborating on this family together.
